How is an ingrown toenail treated and removed?

The typical minor surgical procedure for ingrown toenail removal involves removing the very small portion of the nail that is curving into the skin and cleaning out any infected tissue around the nail. In addition, a chemical is often applied to the root of the toenail corner to prevent the toenail from becoming ingrown in the future. The entire procedure takes under 10 minutes and is performed in the office on the same day of your initial visit. Alternatively for chronic and non-severe ingrown and pincer toenails a non-invasive option called the Onyfix Nail Correction System may be recommended. Read more about Onyfix below.

Is It Painful?

The ingrown toenail removal procedure is performed under local anesthesia. A local anesthetic is injected into the affected toenail prior to the procedure, thus there is no pain during the procedure itself. Numbness in the toe can last for a few hours after the procedure. Nonetheless, patients can walk out of the office without restrictions after the procedure as the ability to move the toes is not affected.

How long is the recovery?

Following the ingrown toenail removal procedure, there is a specific after-care protocol provided in the office. The affected toenails return to normal on average 12 to 14 days following the procedure. Normal gym and sports activities can be resumed at this time.

Onyfix Nail Correction

For chronic and non-severe ingrown toenails the Onyfix Nail Correction System may be recommended, which provides a safe, non-invasive, and effective way to treat involuted and ingrown toenails. The revolutionary system is completely pain free, takes minutes to apply in the office, and involves zero downtime. It is an excellent choice for kids or those with Diabetes or circulation problems. Besides ingrown toenails, Onyfix Nail Correction System can straighten out deformed, damaged and pincer toenails using guided physiological nail growth. A pincer toenail is a nail deformity characterized by nails that become thickened and curve into themselves at the distal corners of the nails.

What is THE Onyfix Nail Correction System?

The Onyfix Nail Correction System leverages a composite resin strip placed at the base of the nail plate that guides toenail growth. When the resin is hardened with a special light, it adheres to the hard part of the nail and acts as a crutch to guide nail growth in a straight manner, instead of curving inwards at the corners. The resin must stay on the nail until it reaches at least one third of the way from the tip of the nail for the system to be effective.

Is ONYFIX painful?

There is no pain or discomfort during application, usage, or removal of the Onyfix Nail Correction System. There is no down-time or limitation of activity when the Onyfix is on the nail. If desired, polish may be applied over the Onyfix safely without interfering with the resin adhesion.

How many ONYFIX treatments are required?

The Onyfix Nail Correction System must stay adhered to the nail until it reaches the final one third of the nail, which typically takes approximately 9 months. Thus, it takes approximately 9 months to see the results of the treatment. To ensure correction is maintained, Dr. Lobkova will re-assess the strip every 6-8 weeks and place an additional strip when needed. The number of treatments depends on the speed of nail growth and how well the Onyfix system is adhering to the affected nail.

Is ONYFIX safe?

Very safe. In fact, composite resin is used in aesthetic dentistry and orthodontics everyday. Dr. Nelya Lobkova at Step Up Footcare tailors the evidence-based Onyfix Nail Correction System in her practice to meet each patient’s individual needs.
